I currently have a Kyocera 2135 and a serial cable I connect to my
laptop and Palm Pilot. The newer Kyocera phones have changed the
connector on the bottom of the phone so I'll need to purchase a new
cable if I upgrade.

Are there any phone manufactures around that will probably not be
changing the data connector on the bottom of the phone every year or so?
I don't want to be purchasing new data cables every other year.

I believe that Motorola has standardized on chargers and data cables
beginning with the V60. I've used the same ones on V60, 120e, T720, T270 and
T280. I have been told that the new 710 and 840 use the same too, but will
be relieved to see it come true.

Hate to tell ya, but your probably screwed. While you may be able to get
some cables that are the same, most went to USB instead of serial. I used to
have a serial cable with my Kyocera 2035, but went to a 2235 (which supports
1X), and had to switch to USB instead of serial to use the 1X. (The serial
still worked, but only at low speed, and the phone defaulted to a USB
connection, and the com parameters had to be changed to use serial). Of
course, for many of them, once I switched to a USB cable instead of serial,
many of the connectors are the same, and I can usually just change the
drivers when I change phones.

Not sure what 'newer' Kyo phones you mean, the xx35 lines (from 2035 to
7135) use the same connector. Maybe it's a different model you are talking
about.
