Considering what just happened I can't believe more people have not responded. My nominations are serious in this thread. I can see where Ray is going to be a problem for some AMD folks but you must admit he acts very grown up.

FYI if you haven't been around some idiot went nuts and signed up with the F-word as his login. Then "F" posted a bunch of nothing using mostly just questions marks. "F" changed names to "huh" and continued until Fredi incinerated the posts.

Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.

Reply to lakedude

Well some of use bumped his posts away, and then Fredi bombed them.

All in all, if we do the same in future, it should keep things cool. Fredi reacted pretty quickly I believe (having problems keeping up with your time zones) and that's what matters.

yes. which was good of him.

posters such as mr huh are much like grafiti artists...

try to cover as much space as possible, upsetting as many people and catching as many eyes as possible.

removal of all his posts nullifies his efforts... and is probably more effective than banning one Nic.

se in our home town they did a study...
in one location there was a huge wall very prone to grafiti...
so they painted it with special (but costly paint), and had a cleaner keep an eye on it.

so whenever it got grafitied, it was completely erased within a matter of hours thanks to the guy and the specialy easy to clean paint.

after just 2 weeks or so the amount of grafiti had fallen to virtually zero for this wall.
and over the next few months they easily recouped the costs associated with the cleaner and paint as repainting &/or spraycleaning was now not required.

To everyone, I recommend you PM Fredi with your concerns/comments/ideas/thanks/brownnosing/etc. I and others have talked with him about many things regarding potential changes for the forum, and he would probably want to hear from you.

And if not...well Fredi, I guess you can delete my post

I finally PM'd him. At least I'm trying to come up with some decent ideas.

Like I said though, if all he has on us is vested time, I don't know how he could make any moderators without a bit of risk to his own job.

I think one or two moderators would be ok but I would have to insist that they remain anonymous because I have seen a few too many moderators get out of control, inflated egos and start power trippin'.
By anonymous I mean they can post but they are forbidden to tell other forum members they are moderators. As well no indication they are moderators is given by special user names and user titles.

The only reason people might have a problem with ray is because he doesn't know much about AMD.

If anyone should be a moderator it's our long lost Stable and then Toejam, but I think they have better things to do. So in that case I would think that the people from the regulars would be good.

You don't need anonymity, you need more than one moderator (3-5) who work together so that no one single person makes a decision. Only Fredi should be able to make decisions single handed.

A good moderator has to seperate themself from their biases. A good moderator will only enforce the forum rules (code of conduct) and does not judge members by their biases. In a hardware forum like ours it would be an asset if the moderator has a vast knowledge of computers but it is not necessary or would it reflect on how well the person could moderate.

Reply to zpyrd

Tonight was a good example of people being falsely accused of the "?" attack
simply because some don't like them.
I would not want that person to be a moderator. Would anyone else?
Just as Zpyrd suggests, computer knowledge is a plus but it boils down to being
unbiased and curtailing the personal attacks.

Everyone has a bias or quirk of some sort. It's what gives everyone their personality to some degree...

Zyprd: pro-hooters
Crashman: anti-VIA
AMDmeltdown: anti-AMD
Fugger: anti-AMD
Matisaro: pro-AMD
RCF84: pro-ATI
Raystonn: very pro-Intel
Fatburger: switches daily
dhlucke: spud, kennyshin, need I say more?
AMD-man: passive

FatBurger analogy is funny.

Dh you can get excited sometimes but very rarely attack someone personally.

Yes. Everyone has a quirk and it is very difficult to treat people fairly
when you have strong convictions. I learn from discussions in these forums
but seldom take part. I try to see both sides but with some subjects it is
difficult. Some people are very close-minded toward their convictions. A
moderator must be like a judge and not let his beliefs take hold.
Am I applying for the job? Hell no. I have enough grey hair.
As you get older you will still be irritated by some people, you will just
learn to blow it off. A lot of things we think are so important really are not.

Nothin against AMDman but I gotta axe him. He woulda hung AMDmelty on no evidence. Please do not be offended AMDman I would not put myself in for the honor either based on my posts here. I would actually make a good moderator as I am not biased against any company other then Sony but I have not alway kept my cool. I also get annoyed easily by one member who everyone else seems to like. Nope I wouldn't make a good mod after all. I need time to cool off and a mod needs to react quick.

Hmm, I have nothing against AMDMeltdown except for insulting people. Sure, if I was a moderator, I'd ban him, but not for bias, but rather for rude unwanted comments. I sincerely believe calling a human being a mongrel has no place in this community. Really, I don't think I'd make a good moderator myself. Even with the best intensions, I don't know if I can control myself with that much power.

That's exactly why you shouldn't be a MOD. BAN BAN BAN.

Why do you guys insist on banning people. Ignore the guy, and he'll stop bothering you.

i think if mods do get to ban there should only be for 6 hours. becuse that would give time for fredi to look it over and decide if it was worthy of a ban or say that person should not have been banned

i say this becuase what if ferdi was not here when the hole thing started lasted night the guy would of keep going becuse nobody could stop him. they would just be able to delet his postes

It only makes sense that amdman would have a problem with amdmeltdown. You can see the potential for trouble just in the names without even looking at posts.

I gotta stick up a little for amdmelty. I have seen him put out information fyi and get jumped on pretty hard for it. If you start out polite and someone jumps you it is hard to keep your cool and not get crappy back. After a while you might not even try to be polite anymore. This fourm is packed with do it yourselfers who tend to be for amd and so it is hard to say anyhing against amd without getting jumped. Don't get me wrong amdmelty would be near the bottom of my list for mod but he shouldn't be banned either.

The best solution IMO is to have an odd number of mods (3 or 5, most likely) that vote on things like people being banned. All the mods have the ability to ban/delete/whatever, but they can't act by themselves.

You don't seem to be gettign my point...I don't hate AMDMeltdown because he likes Intel (hey, I think the P4 1.6A is great too!), but because he constantly insults everyone who disagrees with him.

Good idea in theory but what are the chances of all 5 mods being online and able to respond at the same time?

Odd Mods . . . I like it.

But make it 9, like the Supreme Court.

Mebbe not. The more there are, the less chance things will get done (in a timely manner).

The Mods don't have to be particularly unbiased. They just have to be aware of the Forum Rules. Mass spammage and flagrant insults are pretty easy to spot, regardless of which side of the fence you park your HDD on.

But it should be those who are here a lot. No sense in having Mods who are only casual visitors . . . else, they won't be around when you need 'em.

And they also have to be sprinkled around the community. You know, for when those occasional Consumer Product Riots break out.

First, look for Melty's first few posts and see what they're like. I don't think I've ever seen them myself.

Also, if there was something that was needed to be taken care of quickly (like the recent spamfest), then a mod would be justified in acting right away. I'm talking about banning people for less obvious reasons.

Er ok. How are mod permissions going to be set based on obviousness of the needed action. I'm not trying to be a jerk but I don't get your most recent point. I was basically all for you original plan except that I was trying to point out that there would be a good chance that it would be ineffective if what just happened with F/H/S happens again.

Dude I've been a member of this forum from the first day it was running and I can remember things that happened before you "newbees" came along. I may not be the most prolific poster but I'm within a few minutes of being the oldest. I've been reading Tom's for many years before that even. I've been reading Tom's long enough to remember when you were a looser if you bought anything but Intel. AMD has done a wonderful job, lately, melty has been a jerk, lately, and I've been posting a lot, lately. None of what goes on around here, lately, changes what has gone on in the past.
