I just built a new Duron system and it has been working great. No problems along the road until now. Suddenly, when windows loads, I get blue-screen-of-death just as my desktop shows up. By using the step-by-step option in the windows boot menu, I think i narrowed it down to the emm386.exe file as causing the problems because when i load everything else but that file, the computer works fine. Any advice on how to fix it? I am using the latest Via 4-in-1 drivers on an Abit KT7A. Thanks very much in advance.

Sounds like a memory conflict, with emm386 taking some prime real-estate. You can chuck emm386, put in something like an E=C000-C777 line, or take out the RAM flag on the config line.

Did you just drop the old hard drive and OS onto a new board? Post win95 the OS does not need config.sys at all. I was shocked to read you still had emm386.exe on your machine.

Instead of deleting the line in the config.sys just REM it out:

REM loadhigh=emm386.exe C700-D0000 (Example)

See if that works.

BTW What OS are you using?

What did we do before we had computers?
