That's because you are trying to run a DOS program on a NON-DOS system - WinXP is not DOS nor is it built on DOS - it does have a DOS emulator, but it is just that, an emulator.

Yet the programs run - can I ignore the error, or is there a fix I can
make to eliminate it (i.e., am I not running DOS programs the 'proper' way?)

You may be able to eliminate the message by running in "compatibility" mode. Check the "Help and Support" on how to run a legacy program in compatibility mode (aka using the compatibility wizard).
