I used to play Counter-Strike (1.2-1.6), I loved it, it was awesome, but since then I haven't really found an FPS I thought was worth playing. Counter-Strike: Source was terrible, although HL2 single player was fun, the multiplayer didn't have a lot to offer. My question is, as someone who's really into original CS (I did on occasion play on CS war3 servers and those were always pretty fun), would you recommend playing TF2?

Yes, TF2 is worth it. It's my favorite multiplayer game right now, and has sucked up countless hours of my time.

Are the different classes pretty balanced? That is to say, it's not just a complete "rock, paper, scissors" type game, and an extremely skilled player could still go 30-0 if they really knew what they were doing?

yeah, its very balanced, in fact considering the number of classes and the completely different nature of each one, they have done an astounding job of balancing (and yes, skill is required to reach the top, i dont care what imbeciles say who say that some classes require none - even a medic needs to know when not to jump in teh way of a rocket.) although i have found COD4 to be eating my time now, TF2 used to be my favourite
