eliminating desktop icons

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers (More info?)

Right click the task bar > properties > under "Notification area" > choose
"Customize" > select the icons your want to disable, click in behavior and
choose to always hide.

You can also do this, click start > run > type in: "msconfig" without quotes
> startup (tab) and uncheck any unnecessary programs that are starting up
with the system.

Sometimes when I install a program, it places an icon down in the
lower right corner of my screen next to the time display -

On your 'Taskbar' yes, this usually indicates a program is running.
Almost every program you install thinks it's so important that it
must run at startup! Firewalls, antivirus and the like yes, but not all.

Goto Start > Run type 'msconfig' (without the quotes) OK, when
the 'system configuration utility' pops up click on the 'Startup' tab
there you have a list of programs set to start when your computer
starts (boots) you can uncheck any items you don't want to start
when you boot. Also have a look in 'services' but take care of what
you disable, a little at a time! make a note of what you've done just
incase you do something you shouldn't have, and something you want
stops working.
