Hey guys, I have been a long time reader of THG and just now found about the forums (ya i know...) Im building my first system and getting the parts off newegg.com I was wondering, does the Motherboard box come with Ribbon cables and IDE (for HD) cables already? Or do I need to purchase them seperately. The site is kind of vague about this. But here is my selection. Im a avid overclocker of Compaqs (ya right) but i have got my old Compaq here to last me 4 years in good shape. Buts its time I got a new one. So I need to know if the motherboard comes with the HD, CD, and Floppy cables. Thanks for you help

Also here is my shopping cart. See any conflicts? Anything I should change? Try to get me to buy an AMD? Im open to suggestions. Thanks

Oh ya. Another question. What is Dual DDR slots? Does this motherboard have them? SShould I get 2 sticks of 512 (or 256) if so?

Gosh some of this stuff is confusing to a hardware newbie...hehe

My recommendations for you:-

CPU: Athlon XP 2400+ retail
Mobo: ASUS A7N8X (non-deluxe)
Ram: Kingston PC2700 CL2.5 DDR 2 stick x 256 MB
Graphics Card: MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB
CD-RW: LiteOn 48x/24x/48x

This setup is going to outperform your 2.4 GHz P4 + SiS 648 setup. If you can afford, buy AXP 2600+ (333 MHz FSB)

Yes, retail motherboards come with floppy cable, plus an 80 pin IDE cable for your hard drive and a 40 pin IDE cable for your optical drive.

As for your choices, I'd recommend going with an Intel 845 PE chipset board instead of the SiS. Either way, these boards do not offer dual DDR... Right now the nForce2 boards are the only ones that are available that do. (Wait a while and you'll be able to buy dual DDR for the P4)So you're OK with just one 512 stick of RAM.

The nice thing about your 2.4 GHz. P4 is it likely will overclock quite well, probably to somewhere close to 2.9 GHz. especially on the PE chipset which lets you keep your AGP and PCI busses in spec while pushing the FSB. I'm not sure if your SiS chipset will let you do that.

Wow thanks alot guys. No I have the money for a Pentium system. Althought If I were on a tight budget I would definately settle with an AMD 2400 or 2200 and the Nforce2 board is great (Without the Integrated video) That would definately be my AMD selection (A7n8X asus MB) But im gonna P4 for now. I only have a 300 watt ATX-PS in my new case anyway.

since you say you're not on a tight budget take a look at the Albatron Gforce4 Ti4600 instead of that 4200, it's a lot faster, 128MB, and supposedly an overclockers dream too. I got one about 2 months ago for $200 and I couldn't be happier! or even the albatron ti4200P turbo which is very affordable and also extremely overclockable (I read a review that clocked it to ti4600 speeds somewhere without modifications to the card)

For DVD-ROM, LiteOn 16x is the best buy. It outperforms all other DVD-ROMs in DVD-Ripping and DAE.

The Ti4200 was more inline with what I wanted. Im not a serouis gamer, but I want it to be there. I made my switch to the Golden Sampler (OCer wet dream) and every place ive read says the 64mb version outdoes the 128. So im stickin with the 64mb ti4200. Ive changed my mobo. I dont know alot about chipsets NB, or SB stuff like that. But ill take you guys word for it.

ok thanks alot guys.

Just a few more questions (I promise)

What is Ultra ATA133, will it work with a U/ATA100/66 mobo? etc

And what exactly does the AGP X 8 mean? Will a video card for an AGP 4x work with it? Or do I need to get the 4x 8x...gah

oh and when it says PC2700 for the mobo. Can I use PC2100?

This is kind of annoying for a noob who just got interested in hardware a month ago.

An HD with ATA 133 will work on MB that has a ATA 100 controller, but it will only run at ATA 100. Same goes for the AGP8x, a video card that supports 8x will work on a 4x agp slot but thats what it will run at as well. And yes you can use PC2100 on a mb that supports PC2700, but why would ya want to? PC2700 not much more that 2100, and the new Athlon chips FSB is 333MHz (2.7MB/s ie PC2700)

Anything else?

Oppss, jsut seen you want a Intel chip. I would get two sticks of PC2100 (256MB or 512MB each) and run them in a Granite Bay motherboard. You need two for dual channel to kick in :) PC2100 is the fastest it lists as supported.
