I didn't like Doom 3 all too much, but I'm sure many here did:

That is exactly what happened to me.  I played the demo then returned the retail game unopened.  It wasn't until I found it in a bargain bin that I repurchased it, mostly for benchmarking purposes.  I still couldn't get into playing it though.

Yeah Doom 3 was pretty terrible.  Maybe we'll get to play as The Rock.

I managed to get through it, only because my son was too scared to play it himself (he was 12 at the time) but he wanted to watch me play it through to the end.  Played through the first few levels of the expansion and got bored and uninstalled it.

However, my daughter and I played several co-op levels on my network and we had a blast.  Killing demons in the midst of satanic symbols, rivers of blood, and people impaled in various ways made for good family time ;)

I still doubt they'll be able to capture the feel of Doom 1 & 2 in this one, but I look forward to seeing how their attempt goes.

Wow I am really surprised to see that so many people disliked DooM 3. I loved and and have never met anyone who has said other wise. I was real excited when I saw that DooM 4 was announced. Hopefully they will give you guys what you are lookin for this time around.

Best,

I loved Doom3 when it came out due to how amazing the graphics were at the time, but as the game has aged, it's not as entertaining as say Half-Life 2 was.

Meh, Doom 3 was okay. More style than substance. Yeah it looked great and it started out kinda scary, but 15 - 20 minutes after all hell breaks loose, it gets rather predictable.

It was fun enough to complete to the end, but I only played it once, then uninstalled it.

i completely agree with 3ball
i liked doom 3

i thought i didnt at first, but i got use to the dark surroundings.
that made the game even more fun; not being able to see your enemy, except from the fire blast from your gun.
the visuals are still pretty decent
playing it in the dark with the sound turned way up on my 5.1 was freaking awesome.
a lot of parts scared the crap out of me
i cant wait for doom 4 to come out.

I loved Doom 3.

Enter an area;

hold your breath;

breathlessy check out the dark, shadowy corners;

see a medkit or shells or armor and head towards it;

have your adrenaline spike as demons appear all arround you;

die.

Then comes the mundane part - figuring out where to go, what weapon to use etc to get past that certain area.

Still a blast for, for me anyway.

And I stand by this - Doom 3 is the only FPS I've ever played that actually required me to improve my FPS skills to get through it.

That would be awesome....do the People eyebrow to scare off the demons.

I remember when Doom 3 was coming out and so was HL2. I looked at both and the characters for Doom 3 seemed bland and unrealistic. HL2 just seemed much better at the time.

I also played the demo at max settings albiet it wouldn't let me change the res to anything above 640x480 for some reason. I was so unimpressed and bored. One thing that annoyed me was where the demons would spawn from. Some came from behind stairs when nothing was there.

Heck Painkiller was a much better game with the same style graphics not using IDs game engine either.

I think something was lost with Doom 3... at least that's my opinion Sure we've moved on from the "arcade" style of FPS gaming, but the original titles had such a unique atmosphere... which the "Gloomy Doomie" just lacked. When I think of Doom, I think of Hell unleashed, not a dark, claustrophobic funhouse. I can't I disliked Doom 3; I just liked the older titles better.

So you have to ask: how many sequels does it take to run a franchise into the ground? Why do some companies -game studios and film studios alike- keep milking a dried-up old cow? Will we buy Doom 4? Probably... because we're still holding on to the goodness that was the original Doom. The same holds true when we head out to the theater to watch Balboa or Friday the 13th Part 13.

Painkiller was definitely a better game.

I agree that Doom 3 is not everybody's game; that's PC gaming (and life, thankfully) for you.

But looking at user reviews around the net the past few years many of the scores you see are pretty ridiculous.

Average haters review:

Glorified tech demo. too dark. got old after 15 minutes.  2.5 out of 10.

That's pretty silly if you ask me.

Duct Tape Mod.

I tried playing through it but got tired of teh darkness and having to switch from gun to light and uninstalled it.  After i found teh DTM i reinstalled and had alot more fun lol.  True it took alot of the scare factor out of it but to me it made it a more enjoyable experience.
