On shutdown, screen usually with 'Saving your settings'
text, now shows 'Installing 1 of 3 updates'.
Then this message replaced (same background),
'Do not switch off, or unplug your computer.
Windows will shutdown automatically'.
Left 24 hours, still same message showing.
Unplugged, rebooted, shutdown ...
same message.
XP with SP2 installed at least 2 weeks with no problems.
Can anyone help.
Please.

Sorry!!!
Failed to notice the yellow shield in the System Tray.
The three MS updates had been downloaded automatically,
The Security Centre (XP SP2) wanted acceptance to load
them. Clicked the yellow shield; clicked acceptance;
asked to restart .... and all is well.
How does a new user get to know these things?
Hope this helps someone else.
