thanks. the reason why i asked this is that i have a 22" display, but when playing Supcom, it gets too choppy. So Im using the nvidia 'no scaling' option so that i can still have a crisp image but use less resources on a smaller size resolution

So what is the native resolution? if it's 1280x1024 aren't you going to lose the sides of a 1440x900 image? assuming it will even allow it!
Although you have a few less pixels to display in your widescreen resolution, the graphic engine and GPU will have more of the world to calculate and render because of the increased viewing angle.
More calculations = more work regardless of actual display resolution.
