This has been asked once before. Nowhere in the net an answer for this, only a returning question about the graphics card. This error message seems to pop up cafter updating of of various breeds of nVidia, at least in 9 series:

"Powerpoint has detected that your graphics card may not be configured properly for an optimal slide show experience"

I also received this message.

I have a HP Tower (factory fitted) and the video card is soldered to the motherboard. Although the Microsoft's minimum required configuration (DirectX 9.0c) seemed correct (after testing Dxdiag.exe), transitions between slides were virtually ineffective.

I found and installed a second hand "NVIDIA FX2500" card ($ 30) into the AGP1 slot of the motherboard and since then the transitions and animations run smoothly.

Hope that this solution solves the problem for other people.
