Hello.

Anyone have an opinion on this game? I play NWN2 already, but the server "issues" have led me to want another backup RPG that I can play with other people. Finally tired of BFME2 and have not been interested in any other RTS games.
Hellgate London is also $30 and I read on Anandtech that they have "loosened" the non subsription rules. Just passed my A+ certification today! Wanted to reward myself.

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on your A+.

I have not played hellgate London but I haven't seen any favorable reviews for it. Most of the complaints are with it being more repetitive and less creative than Diablo 2 in every way. Fewer creature models by far, all dungeons looking extremely similar, etc. For the most part people say it was kind of fun, but had no staying power at all.

If youa re looking for a good RPG you might want to check out the Witcher. That has gotten a ton and a half of favorable reviews. I would recommend trying the demo for that before buying it though.

I beat up Hellgate in our review but I honestly haven't played it since. The problems I had with it may be fixed by now but I can't imagine they could patch fixes for the level and enemy variety problems and overall story design.

I'd say to give it a pass and hit up the Witcher or maybe Mass Effect if you're looking for a sci-fi RPG.

Do be aware that Mass Effect for the PC comes saddled with some pretty nasty DRM. There are plenty of other threads on that topic though.

I bought Hellgate: London. Repetitive as hell. Played the first two or three chapters, realized every level was going to look the same, and tossed it back on the shelf. I regret my tendency not to read reviews of computer games immensely in this case.

I did buy Mass Effect for the PC and enjoy it, regardless of the DRM. The Witcher was also a great game, though it felt too short once it was done. That may be a good sign though.

Took half of the advice. Rollerbladed. Drank vodka. Downloaded the demo. It can be a 3rd person game which I like more than 1st person. Playing the marksman. Seems like fun, but ill let youse know if I buy it.

I'd say save your money. It's a prime example of terrible execution. I was all pumped about the game when it came out. I've got a collector's edition and a founder's subscription and all sorts of other goodies, so I'm well over $200 into the game ... I've not played the game in months though.

I championed the game for a long while. I figured they had the right idea, but were suffering from some time crunch bugs. However, while the patches have done a great job increasing stability and eliminating most of the lag(This might be partially, because no one wants to play it anymore) and bugs they've not done a damn thing for the game play.

The new areas they added were interesting, but you had to grind hundreds and hundreds of mobs from the same old areas you'd been in just to get to the new stuff. The abilities just arn't satisfying to use aside from a select few in my opinion. The areas and enemies are repetitive. The AI in general has little going on aside from lots of guys swarming you.

The game is a great concept that has been handled so badly that they've ruined it beyond recovery in my opinion. They've already got my money, but it will definitely make me think twice about a lifetime subscription offer again. I'm just curious as to whether the problems were the result of Flagship's lackluster development or of pressure from EA.

The game received a 70% overall over on Ramerankings.com

Best thing to do is read the reviews and download the demo here (couldn't find it on the official website). Having a hands-on experience usually helps in making that financial investment.
