I came across this list while trying to determine just how many MMORPGs are out there. Notice the huge amounts of fantasy-based themes. And for some reason, Neverwinter Nights and PlayStation Home made the list....

The reduced, free listing can be accessed here

what do any of you think of EVE? theres a free 30 day trial on steam atm, and i was thinking about giving it ago.

EVE is a very interesting game, but it has a fairly rough learning curve. Just play through the tutorial when you start. It is really long, but all of the lessons are necessary. It also gives you a free ship at the end.

Eve is fun. I played it for a few months. I am a die hard PVEer though and Eve is very PVP focused. Eventually I got tired of repeating the same content over and over and over and let my subscription lapse. Since then they have apparently had a massive update, but I haven't had the time or desire to go back and try it out. I'm waiting on a few things at the moment in the MMO world.

Warhammer Online should be interesting for a while, but since it is also very PVP focused I'm not sure how long I'll be into it.

Reportedly there is a KOTOR MMO being developed by Bioware and Lucasarts. I suspect that one will devour me whole and not let me go for a long long time once it comes out.

Also Eve's leveling system is kinda weird. It has nothing to do with your actions or even how much time you spend logged in. You level just as fast logged out as you do logged in. You just have to hop on occasionally to change what you are learning. Though if you do that, you will find yourself high on skill points and short on cash.

I would argue that while EVE has a very intense and active PVP system that PVP focused is the wrong term for the game. There are so many paths in that game you can take, many of which don't even involve combat.

Agreed on the levelling system. It is very unique. Everything you'll do in that game has a skill associated with it. All of the skills build on a real time skill point gain basis, so there are very limited things you can do to improve how quickly you learn skills.

It is frustrating early on when you want to be able to rush yourself into a bigger ship with all the bells and whistles, but you'll learn to love it once you've spent some time with it. It's nice to know that you arn't losing ground in an MMO simply because you took a vacation or didn't feel like spending piles of time on it lately.

My biggest complaint with that game is that the PVE quest system is very very repetitive. You'll literally do the exact same 20 missions over and over again if you spend much time missioning. The money is good though, and the risk is very easy to judge.

Warhammer Online just really disappoints me that they didn't go for 40k. Do we honestly need another fantasy MMO, when we could have Space Wolves, Inquisitors, and Chaos Marines?

I agree that Warhammer 40K would have been better, but I think Warhammer Online will still be pretty fun. The developers seem to really enjoy what they are doing and have a lot of freedom.

i have downloaded the eve online demo just to give it a go, not too sure of it although the mouse based control work surprisingly well and it looks great. also, the levelling system does seem tr make sense in that although not logged in the eve universe carries on regardless.

however, i could see it sucking up a large amount of time.

Depends on what you got addicted to....but in all fairness, it is most likely that you should stay away from the genre in general. If it is a good game chances are you'll be drawn in (against your intentions, apparently), if it is a bad game then you won't have fun playing it. Either way, you loose.

see that's the thing i have no idea what i got addicted to in WoW i think it was a combination of things. i tried to go back to WoW about 3 month after quitting and found the game unbearable. Think your probably right though and i should just avoid MMORPGs altogether.

MMO's are big on the player. Nearly unplayable games you wouldn't spend ten minutes with by yourself can be fun with the right people. That's pretty much the way MMO's are designed.

When I play one and find myself having to go it alone, I go play a game designed for that, they tend to be far better.

Ive tried quite a lot of free mmorpgs and personally i tihnk the best, in terms of graphics especially, is 9Dragons (or possibly another of acclaims as they use the same engine). For a free game they actually look quite nice, even on my 22" widescreen at max resolution.

I decided to give Anarchy Online a spin. I figured an MMO thats been around as long as that one must have something going for it, and it is free (which might be what it has going for it).

My impression is that it is a mediocre but not terrible MMO. I'm not very far in, but it strikes me as decent, but nothing special. If you are just looking for a generic MMO to scratch your itch, it'll do.

Might be worth mentioning, if you have an inactive EQ or EQ2 account, it should be usable for free until the end of July.
