According to the unofficial Diablo site diabloii.net tips and rumours coming from "reliable" sources point to the long awaited Diablo 3 being announced at WWI Paris 2008.

There's an interesting theory they have over at Diabloii.net regarding the naming scheme for the secret images:

At first they though the numbers in the hidden images corresponded to the english alphabet, and until today it was looking like D, O, W could end up spelling DASHOW, one of the artists that worked on Diablo II (who coincidentally had a "purple walrus" as his sort of trademark), but now it's looking like the numbers from Lost.
This stands out to me quite heavily from the Lost wiki:

This isn't StarCraft II related, and Blizzard has no reason to have such an extensive teaser just to announce a release date for Wrath of the Lich King.

I haven't felt excited like this since Christmas when I was little. Crossing your fingers, hoping that they got you what you wanted, and I mean either way it's a free gift so it's awesome, but, you just hope deep down that it isn't some boring racing game

Hmm... it could be something related to SC universe. One of the 5 symbols, the one on the lower left, is the symbol of the protoss that is used by Blizz. The shapes sorrounding the eyes seem to look like those of a protoss, not of some armor. And if you remember is Zeratul who discovered the Hybrids on a frozen moon (secret mission in SC:BW), hence the ice around. The symbol on the lower right could resemble some planets. The melting of the ice could mean that the Hybrids have awaken or something and we will get some insight of the story like a trailer where Zeratul shares with Raynor some of his discoveries. Or probably Blizzard will announce the 4th race - the Hybrids. Anyway I don't know what the other symbols mean, some could be taken from Diablo. I used to know all the D2 runes. 
So Blizz could be makin some sort of one symbol - on e major announcement type of analogy each coupled with a new image of the ice and the eyes. Hope I am wrong and is Tyrael or D3

I'm all for staying real about it... but having said that, the stars in the middle do seem to be eyes, but they could be characters from any of the three realms. What if Blizzard is making an entirely new game? That would be shocking, I know, but possibly even more fantastic than a DIII.
A SCII release date would be nice too
Oh, and amdfangirl: dying in nm by steel scarabs is kinda embarrassing, dontcha think? That is, unless you're playing single player...
