Programs that won't delete, quarantine, or clean after McA..

I did a virus scan and deleted all of the unwanted programs that
somehow installed themselves on my computer, but there are three that
just won't go away. They can't be deleted manually because the
message says they are in use. They create popups every time I try to
browse with Explorer and it stops me dead in my tracks, because when I
close them it also closes whatever page I happen to be on and I have
to start all over.

My question is; How can I start Windows XP in a mode similar to dos
(I'm told XP doesn't have dos) so that these programs aren't running
by the time I get to them?

I thought maybe if I booted in dos mode, went to the directory where
the programs are, and deleted them in dos mode, then rebooted into
Windows they would be gone.

Start your computer in "safe mode" and rerun the scan.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
