I ran across some info about Linksys WRT54G wireless
router, stating there was a bug in all earlier versions that
cut down on signal strength by 77%, and they recommended
the latest firmware revision. My 4-month old WRT54G
has firmware v.2.00.8. It works great around the house,
but signal strength is weak on my large outdoor deck
(one floor up from router in office in middle of lower.
level). I'm reluctant to update firmware for no reason
(I've had some bad results). Any idea if the newer
firmware improves range?

Thanks!
Scott

Check out www.linksys.org - there are reports that the latest WRT54G
firmware decreased power out. Check out www.freeantennas.com and try a
simple X10 or X12 relector (corner or parabolic) to boost the power up and
ut toward the deck. Ttilt the right hand [as you face the router] rubber
ducky back to aim the little foil-over-cardstock parabolic dish up toward
the next floor, and set the azimuth. Download NetStumbler if you want more
precise signal strength info while you check out the aim. I got increased
power in my office (same floor but 4 wire lath walls in beween) and still
ger very good to excellent signal in the rest of the house, on the deck,
and in the back yard

I have firmware version 2.02.7, and it was a later version the complaints
about power settings were about. There are several third party firmware
suppliers for that router - the linksys.org has lots of information about
them and about official Linksys firmware; check there. But I'd get out the
cover stock paper and scissors and foil and glue (silicone works good with
foil - see your auto parts store) and try a little crafts project first.
If it works you can put a gold star on it! <g>
