3D transistors cut power consumption by 50%

Infineon today said that it has developed multi-gate FINFET transistors, often also described as 3D transistors that dramatically reduce the amount of leakage current. The chip company believes that portable devices built around 3D transistors technology could run about twice as long as products using traditional planar circuitry. Read more

Intel considers 3D transistors for 32 nm processors

Intel is going to great lengths to get a better handle on the power consumption of its semiconductors. On step closer to reality is the "tri-gate" transistor, which enables the company to gain more flexibility in adjusting, processor performance and power consumption. The technology could be available by 2009 and drop a chip's total power by 35%, Intel said. Read more
