connecting two pc´s for gaming

okay, i want to connect two pc´s so that me and my friend can play multiplayer games with eachother, what kind of hardware do i need? i have WinXP and he has Win98SE, is this a problem?

I'd recommend simple good ol' RJ45 networking. You'll need a NIC card in each computer, plus a cross-over RJ45 cable to connect the two. Shouldn't cost you more than $40.

USB isn't as fast as Ethernet.

And you should have any problems with the XP/98SE. Just run the network wizard.

keep your usb for cameras and gamepads, let ethernet cards do their own job.
