And how do I join the Tom's team? And will running F@H for !4-5 hours a day (thats my limit.....dad refuses to let me leave the machine on longer, says it will distract me from studies) damage the GPU/CPU?
And what's a WU? And how is the scoring done?

Enter the number 40051 in the team box and all your results will be counted towards THGF, below is a screenshot of the CPU and GPU clients and as you can see they are both set up exactly the same way.

Tbh, there should be an icon for folding for toms on the home page that never goes away. That would get a ton of new users although they would come and go like the rain, it would still help overall...

Dude, calm down and take a breath.

This is an opportunity for you to do something good for someone that needs a cure for a disease. It could be you or a loved one in the future, you never know.

Read this page:

http://folding.stanford.edu/

If it interests you then download the proper client that applies to your hardware. If you dont know then list your hardware config and someone here can tell you what to install:

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download

Follow the directions recently posted by mousemonkey to join after you install the proper client...

Mine's an XFX 4870. My second. It's my first half decent gaming rig, so I don't know much about XFX. Is it good? I took it as it was the only brand I could find in the shops. Few people buy ATI in Calcutta- everyone has a sort of complex about Intel and nVidia. My previous rig (if you can call it that) was a P4 Northwood, 2.0GHz, 256 DDR1 206MHz, GeForce 5500 256 MB. I strongly suspect Crysis killed off the first 4870. Lasted 30 minutes without problems- then it would lock up the second it hit 86. This one goes past 95 with no stability problems (in Crysis. Hits 81 in everything else). And no, this is not a temperature issue. Ambient is ~40 Celsius.

Might be worthwhile to go with gpu folding for you. Just take a look at your gpu temps from time to time, just to be sure.

Also I have read before (forgot the site) that shows how to tweak the ati gpu client to minimize the cpu usage.

I checked the link. Went above and beyond my head.
Currently CPU usage is at 33 %- I'll just stick to that.

Update F@H right now!

I have a question does it work better to F@H with a GPU or CPU?

The GPU does produce more points per day than a cpu.

Though if you could do both, it would help your points per day.

GPU is better unless you can run an i7 24/7 in which case it will make more points, providing you do the right work units. I don't know the details though, but I think they were posted somewhere in this thread. If not, you can Google bigadv and I'm sure you'll find what you're after.

Nice, just one question does crossfire/sli work while folding. I know to activate SLI you must go into Nvidia control panel and click on the program or game you would like SLI to run on.

*Update to Everyone*
I'm away from my Custom Rig, cause I'm at my mom's house for the next couple weeks, but I'm getting my brothers laptop, my mom's laptop and desktop and my Custom Built HP a400y. So I will be posting once all of those computers are up and running for our team!

nope, in fact in order for it to see both of my cards, i have to extend the monitor onto the other card

so every time i go from folding to gaming i have to enable crossfire

well i decided to pitch in. Got 2 laptops working on F@H atm.

1. core 2 duo 1.6 Ghz T5200, 2 GB ddr2.

2. Pentium dual core 1.86 Ghz T2390, 1GB ddr2.

May add another computer to the mix. :)

well, after looking at the top 100 teams list, i saw AMD zone just 2 ranks above us. ooo it's time to kick folding into gear guys.

While i originally took out the Pentium dual core laptop above, seeing the core 2 duo laptop is working faster, im gona put it back in along with throw all the other computers (laptops and a desktop) in my house into folding. Just untill we past AMD zone.

Throwing in:

(the two already metioned above)

My 2.8GHz p4 desktop, (thinking about upgrading the gpu to a AGP HD 4650 to run the gpu client.)

2.1 Ghz Pentium dual core laptop 2GB ram

1.4GHz celeron (single core) 756MB ram

Yes, my family has a lot of computers in the house. mainly old laptops no one wants anymore. :p  I think the cely laptop could become a 24/7 folding computer. isn't used very much.

If you can talk a couple of friends into setting up their systems to help that helps enormously.

I am going to try and get set up once I can get all of my systems back in order and networked. I have to break down my media center and RMA the motherboard for a second time. = (

i already got my friends into this, for the laptop, if i lend it to a friend he would be using it for 3d art design for games

though i should be getting the Ci7 laptop soon, i imagine it'll kick ass (probably more so than my desktop, minus the gpu's that is)

Id love to put in all my 7 computers but theyre all noisy and old and slow so my mother would get mad at them beig on all day, and they wouldnt make thst many points anyway :(  i installed folding@home on a customers resale computer thats on all day but its only a pentium d 2.8 :(  i am trying to contri ute but its s little difficult. every little bit helps (well really, it needs to be fast enough to do a WU in a certain period of time)

though i will not press my HTPC into this service, i prefer that cool running and no extra load

if i can figure out how to get my thin clinent hp t5720 with windows xp embedded doing it, it is fanless and thus silent. it doesnt use that much power anyway.
amd neo 1ghz (actuaally an athlon xp
512mb ram
512mb flash disk (thats the biggest problem
FANLESS!!! will it overheat if i leave the fanless system on all day at high load? i could just stick a little fan in there, right?!

if u have any ideas on how to get it running f@h plz plz let me know!

The CPU client can push the temps quite high so I don't think it's the best of ideas, gallant though it may be.
April 3, 2010 3:05:34 PM

i dont care about the temps, as im ging to improve the cooling. could i use a 20gb laptop hard drive in a usb enclosure to boot off xp home? and then run the client like so? would the 1ghz cpu be fast enough for f@h? and yes id leave it on all day possibly all night! would that kill the laptop hard drive being on 24/7 if its already a cery old 4200rpm model? thanks. i am thinking this is sounding like a better and better idea OMG!

hmm... i dont really think having a cpu slower than 1.4Ghz is worth it. Was having the cely laptop going all night, and it hasn't finished yet. my core 2's, Pentium dual cores, and Pentium 4 cpu(s) had about there 3rd WU close to being done sense i started the cely laptop on folding.
