i was wondering what the best gaming rig would be, i have a budget of £400 - £500

either, pre built (if you can find), custome build, or i could build

You see that search bar up there? Use it. Not wanting to be mean or anything, but ALOT of build suggestions have been previously answered for all price ranges. I suggest you search in USD though, seems to be the more popular currency used in this forum.
 
^ dude lives in the UK likely and pricing constantly fluctuates

I did not include an OS Run linux until you can save up to get windows 7 or raise your budget by 65 pounds to get windows 7, otherwise you compromise too much with the build and drop in terms of price perf

FX6300 over an i3 due to better overall performance (once you consider a wider range than the usually tested ones) and more "futureproof" and arguably better upgrade path with Steamroller (B75 with i5 cannot OC while the 8350 can OC on the 970 to reach i5 levels[debatable])
7870XT due to 7950/660ti like performance at a price cheaper than the regular 7870/660
1tb HDD (2tb is only 15 pounds more so consider that as well)
Quality PSU and case with USB 3 (not really more expensive than non USB 3 cases)
