Casual Conversation Thread Mk III
Last response: in Toms Network
Guys let me begin with an apology.
I messed up with some old account deletes (removing old accounts that were banned but not deleted, and sockpuppets) and took this one out by accident ... collateral damage.
Please accept my apologies and continue on here.
I will not play with any handgrenades without reading the instructions on the side of the pin after I remove it.

wonder what it 3dmark11 and Cinebench 11.5 bench is? LOL
It would probably do great if it didn't overheat in the first 5 minutes under load (80c for gpu) and drop clocks. I think it needs a serious paste job and I've never done it before. (on a notebook)
I wish there was a way I could adjust fan speeds...
Anyhow, Windows index scores are:
7.5
7.7
7.9
7.9
7.9
This is for MM:

Do those fans get pretty loud? Maybe there's an aftermarket fan you can put in there. Not sure though, but maybe higher end laptops have aftermarket parts you can put in it.
Mmmm coffee is awesome.

Driver download sites: Are they a resource, ad traps, or malware?
I've seen quite a few requests for drivers recently for hardware that is so old that the manufacturer does not have XP drivers. When I do the obvious Google search, some sites come up over and over again with the drivers. Interesting idea - a site that aggregates drivers for download.
But they smell like a trap to me. "Here, come to my site. I've got drivers the manufacturer can't provide; just install them with admin privileges." It's hard-wired into my reflexes not to even visit a site like that.
So have any of you had experience good, bad, or indifferent with these sites in general, or some specific one? I'm kind of curious.

Go with your gut and not trust them. Best way to avoid something is by avoiding it entirely (or trying to atleast).
This site has always been good to me though.

You are very correct about those sites being questionable. Same with the sites that offer free scans (except for genuine sites such as Malwarebytes). I read warnings about this on Kim Komando's newsletters which are excellent IMO.
Driver downloads is a ruse used to make these fake sites appear to be legit.
As you are well aware, every time one clicks on an .exe file we are giving them free access to download whatever that .exe file is attached to. The problem arises when that file downloads stuff other than or in addition to the advertised program. That's how "babylon toolbar", "widgi toolbar" etc find their way into people's computers.

Open candy... and yes Babylon search is a pain in the arse to remove!

I've used something called "DriverAgent." They've got some banner ads on their site, but otherwise appear to be clean and provide a useful service. It will check your entire system for out-of-date drivers, then provide downloads either from their source or directly from the manufacturer of the ones you choose to update.

IMHO, I avoid (and recommend avoidance) at all of the so-called driver sites. Not only do they tend to deposit all sorts of nasties in your cache, but they are often dens of "click-ware" because of the deceptive practices they use to "help" you.
Many an infected system has resulted from these sites. Many. Heard of AntiVirus 2012 and its many permutations? If not, cruise on over to just about any of the driver sites and I am sure you can be introduced.

IMO Driver sites are a last resort option!
You really need to be desperate for some old drivers to be going there in the first place, when I have no other options I use Driverguide.com.

Fixed it! Yes! I wrote the guy and told him of the thermal throttling and he wrote back saying he never encountered the issue (liar) and I figured it out and wrote him back informing him that I fixed it... he promptly wrote back and asked how I did it... hmmm?

We haven't had music on the jobsite for about a year. When I was working for a different contractor last month we listened to music all day and it was so much more enjoyable. Well my dad let me put one of these on his account at the local hardware store!
http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/tools/Batteries-Charg...
It's pretty nice, the sound quality is great. I have a bunch of Milwaukee cordless drills and impact drivers and I can use a battery from the drill to power the radio. It will run all day on one full charged battery. It also has an auxiliary input so I can plug my phone in and listen to MP3s or Pandora. Also if you plug the radio in with the power cord you can also plug your car charger into the radio and keep your phone/MP3 player charged. Very nifty. It is weatherproof and has a weatherproof compartment that holds your phone, aux input, and battery pack. I love this thing!

I get my 20mbps cable installed tomorrow. I haven't had my own internet or cable TV for a few months now. I left some very specific instructions for the tech. I factory reset the router I want him to use and gave him all the information. I made it idiot proof, lets hope he can comply. If he tries to pull the "I can only install one of our routers" crap I'm gonna flip. They want to charge $5 a month for their Linksys WRT54Gs. I want none of it!

It has sweet LED lights that guarantee a seizure within 10 minutes or your money back. Good thing there is an off switch for them, lol.

It is working flawlessly for over a year and I use MAC address filtering as well as WPA2 security.

It's still not good enough to stream video between two wireless devices on the network without buffering. So I'm hoping to get an N router eventually.

let him just install the cable modem direct hook up to your main rig if it near the cable modem
should always have one computer wired anyway and you should have your cable modem near your main rig
then do the router yourself
unless all of your computers run wireless???

Yes all my computers are wireless. My neighborhood is on fiber optics and I have a switch on the side of my house that controls ethernet jacks in my wall. I have no jacks near any computers anyway.
