Wont boot past startup screen. help

Hi. I have a HP laptop dv5. Was running windows 7 pretty but i decided to try the windows 8. I boot up the disc. Installed windows 8 64bit and after the first restart, the laptop wont go past the startup screen where there is the hp logo and "press esc for startup options". If i press esc or any other button, it beeps like hell.

Any help please.

If i disconnect the hdd and switch it on, it gets past the hp screen but tellss me no os found. Is the hdd defective?

I connected the hdd to a friend pc via usb and it works fine. So we formatted it and reconnected it to my laptop. Butnstill it wont go past hp scren
