I know we have a dedicated gaming section but gaming is also Entertainment, I'm wondering how many older gamers we have at Toms, specifically over 40 years old that any type of gaming is in your blood?

I'm 60 years old and PC gaming is my thing, specifically First Person Shooters, presently playing Crysis 3, it's quite enjoyable, I'm on my second venture through it, it's rather fun.

Many games are just not worth playing through past the first time. and then occasionally we get one that is!

My FPS experience started with Aliens vs Predator some time around 1998 maybe, but was not a PC game, it was on the SEGA Jaguar system, anyway that's the game that got me hooked on FPS games.

Even if you are below 40 you are still invited to share your gaming experiences in this thread, just don't be afraid of your age and let us know how old you are, so we know who we're talking to?

More about : older gamers toms

fyi, i know of additional avp releases in case you were interested.
avp (pc)
avp2 (pc)
avp2 primal hunt (pc expansion pack)
avp: extinction (ps2)
avp (ps3)

i'm 28 and while i do not game as much as i used to i blame this more on the lack of any decent games more than anything else. back in the 90's and early 00's we had quite a few interesting if not unique releases such as...

halflife and teamfortress
starcraft
total annihilation
warzone2100
unreal tournament and sequels
quake
guild wars
halo

to name pc games alone. consoles had quite a number more good titles available.

currently quite a few companies soley create clone copies and market the game as new when its basically the same as the prequel. in addition they add dlc which should have been included to begin with. if a sequel is to be made either quite a bit of content should be added or the sequel should build upon the original in a positive way. i've seen quite a few screw ups with sequels lately such as supreme commander and starcraft II and a case of a total screwup in the case of guildwars II.

i've seen more good releases in the console market but not by much.

long post and you probably already know it by now but enough said.

I played all the Alien PC releases you mentioned and it does appear consoles seem to be the preferred game designing target especially if you go look on store shelves these days.

I like PC gaming because it's only limited by the hardware you run, the more graphics and cpu processing power you have the better the gaming experience, of course for some with the console route a cheaper option that's the route they choose.

I also prefer the mouse and keyboard over the hand controller, but play whatever makes you happy, that's the only thing that matters, keep playing!

Brian, It's short but sweet, graphics are great, but it just doesn't seem long enough, but that's no reason not to get into it!

It's the first game in a long time I've wanted to play through a 2nd and 3rd time after finishing it!

At first I thought the bow idea was kinda lame, but after using it my thoughts now are, it's great, it is bonded to the suit, so you always have it and can shoot it cloaked, very useful!

The special arrows are very powerful! :)

I highly recommend Crysis3! Ry

im 42

my first experience with computers was playing with aschii charachters and using a cassette tape computer to play adventure games in 1982. then when the 386/486 era spawned i found myself writing programs in dos. remember messing around with boot disks to get doom to run? autoexec.bat and config.sys? himem? ugh. i got serious into gaming when i first reseached my first gpu..a rendition verite. lol this was around the same time as 3dfx came out and sli.....not the sli we know of now...long story. anyways i graduated from that to a banshee...awsome card for the time. then i messed around with music trackers and midi. that was a PITA writing boot disks for that software. jump ahead a while and the game unreal....crap i needed a pixel based gpu...super expensive. actually my memory faded a bit there...i bought the banshee to play unreal...thats it. anyways after the first pentium 2's came out i started building...then p4's (i still have it). then an amd x2 5600 and from there just various athlons and intels.

you think you got it hard now? try wiring 6 usb's to EACH pin with 1 wire each with six pins going by color. or buying a psu to find out its for pentium only....yup they used to make psu's according to the cpu...thats why some makers still say (athlon and pentium compatible). or finding out your 400$ gpu isnt t&l compatible.....hehe.

hope you enjoyed the story. brought back memories.:)

Ah the good old days of boot disks. The biggest reason for me with that was the first Wing Commander Privateer game. First PC game was commander keen on my neighbors computer.

If any of you old timers played something like Wing Commander and think you have a high-powered

rig, check out Star Citizen. It's a space sim, but thanks to the huge crowd funding (soon 10 mil $) it'll be

so much more.

looks interesting....

space sims are definitely very interesting if done right. i never played wing commander for the pc but i do remember playing various itterations of colony wars on the original ps1 console which was quite fun. i didnt like how x3 terran conflict played out as ship movement was much too clunkly and the game itself was way too complex. the models looked cool though.

although i do NOT like how they are treating the funding.

unless of course the "extras" listed for the high $ investors are able to be purchased in game with just some extra time spent playing. sort of if those extra ships are an "unlock pack" designed to save you time.

if its not like that then i will avoid this game like the plague.

just my own thoughts.

For all the ones too lazy:

Every ship is attainable in-game if you play; at least most of them.

Some extras like physical items are only for those who bought them when

they were available. But that's a minor thing too, as it won't impact the game.

They're very big on not making it pay to win too. With the 10million, a motion capture

studio can now be used for the game. You'll get some bonuses if you pledge before June 28th.

@wyomingknott

what about the 100's of links to newegg lised in the systems subsection of the forum?

newegg is a commercial site as well however can be somewhat vital to discussing pc builds

just saying...... :)
