I recently built a new computer and decided to get an Asus 7870 and want to OC it, but seem to be having some trouble. Everything is all fine and dandy at first when OC'ing it a little at a time then running the furmark benchmark (Oh yeah, I'm using the Asus GPU Tweak) but the second I try to run any game (WoW/Tomb Raider/Borderlands 2) the game either crashes (Tomb Raider/Borderlands 2) or suddenly has dropped from 60+ fps to 10- (WoW). Anyways, was wondering if anyone can explain why this might happen, or give some insight as to why it's happening. Was using http://rog.asus.com/96782012/graphics-cards-2/a-simple-... as a reference on how to use the GPU Tweak.

I have an i5-3570k, Asus HD 7870 CUII, Asus z77 1155 LK Mobo, 8g of ram.

try using MSI afterburner. It might be a case of you losing the silicon lottery and have just got a chip that's a dud for overclocking.

What clocks are you running ? What temperature is the card reaching using GPU-Z preferably ? What drivers are you using ?

Yes, I agree. You should try using MSI Afterburner. Also, every card is not the same. Some overclock better than others. You may have just gotten a dud card.

Maybe its your powersupply?

does gpu tweak adjust the voltages? maybe you need to give it a bit more juice, or maybe its the power supply, as was suggested

I think it was a heat problem. Overclocking causes the graphic card to work more than its built for, therefore more heat is generated and the risk of either shorting the VGA or motheboard gets higher the more time goes by while you overclock. I suggest that you either add some sort of cooiling device outside or inside your pc, or try water cooling.

Did you check your Fans if their working properly. I had that issue before, i smelled something burning. Sometimes you won't notice it. But try touching your GPU if their blazing hot. It's your fans. Set them to Automatic if you can. Coz once those stop. Your GPU will overheat. You can cook pancakes with it.

Make sure before you overclock that your Fans are all working. It's always best to overclock while your Case is open so you can monitor anything fishy and check for Temps. Update your BIOS and Drivers before you start. Too much VOLTS will make your components hotter. Still better to inspect your components in Real Time and not rely on the on board monitoring too much.

The only problem if you don't have an MSI card and you use MSI afterburner it can sometimes allow the card past its safe clocks and it will make your screen all weird. This has happened to me before with a non-MSI card.

I have 2 different 7870 cards. Gigabyte 7870 Ghz (Stock OC) and SapphireTech 7870 (Stock OC). Yes, i got the manufactor oc edition but neither cards overclock beyond that well or even at all. Even the stock oc isnt much at all over reference specs. Its just the line of the 7870.

I have a 7850 that i can overclock the hell out of it and even read that the 7950 can be push to quite some extremes. I just believe there isnt much flexibility on the 7870.

same here When Playing Games Check to see If your Gpu is Running At 100-99% Or Try Giving more power

I remember this happening to me back in the day with HD 5870, after overclocking it would ace all the synthetic benchmarks, but as soon as I launched a game, it either crashed or had ridiculously low frames. I eventually had the card RMAed on the grounds of the GSOD. But here I'm thinking that it's either a bad chip or it's not getting enough power, try raising the power limit a bit and see if that stabalizes it.

I have this problem to. . . I think your graphics card was ran out of thermal paste. Trying putting new thermal paste on it it will solve your problem. And before doing it, monitor first your GPU temp by using EVGA prec. and play a game if the card goes to 95 C and I think it's your GPU causing the problem. Same way goes to your CPU.

As for OCing software, I'd like to add Sapphire TRIXX to the list. Works like a God on my laptop having the HD6650M and my lovely desktop including the MSI HD7870 OCE.

Currently running stock clocks on my desktop. (Tried OCing but I felt it to be not really nessecary.)

My laptop's HD6650M:
Stock: 600Mhz GPU, 1600Mhz Mem.
Currently OCed at: 760Mhz GPU, 1720Mhz Mem.

Somehow my laptop hasn't melted yet, despite the fact it temps are 55c while doing web browsing and above 75c while 'gaming' :p
(But that's just my laptop's fault, these temps. On stock the temps are just about the same)

TriXX also has custom fan control settings, which I really like.
