My stubborn friend is being stubbornly stubborn. So i'm going to start off with the first question. Did ASUS just start becoming popular recently? Also, he's saying Alienware is awesome. I've been telling him otherwise, but he won't listen.

No, Asus has been a leading brand for years. ASRock (which used to be a division of Asus, before splitting off) however has become more popular recently.

Alienware has always been a good manufacturer, albiet highly overpriced. They cater to a specific demographic (expensive, and exotic looking) that people buy mostly for the name.

Also, before Dell bought them a few years ago they had phenomenal support, but that pretty much disappeared. Now they are just really expensive flashy dells. Still a good machine, but not worth the price.
