Safe GPU temps?

So my computer has locked up on me a few times and I think I'm seeing some artifacts now so I'm trying to figure out where the issue is. All of my fans seem to be working and I have a large case, but I think it's a GPU issue. I run two, two gig msi gtx 560 ti's in sli. I'm trying the two cards separate in the two different slots to see if I see any changes and I'm running GPU-Z to monitor temps while I run a video on netflix right now. What temps should I be seeing in a safe zone?

Also, if I'm off on it being the GPU, what else might it be? Could a pci express slot go bad or anything like that? What else might cause graphics problems other than the GPU?

They are MSI cards within their three year warranty, so I think I can send them back to MSI but I don't want to do that without knowing the problem first.

Thanks for any help.

Okay, preparing for bad news here. I don't want to hear it, but let if fly. I have tried both gpu's in the first slot and get the green artifacting with both. Do I have a bad board then? If that's the case, let me know, but honestly that's a bit of a death toll. I upgraded both gpu's last time, but am due for a new motherboard, cpu and ram on he next tick/tock with my build. I don't have a dollar to my name right now to do that if that's the problem though.

Thanks for any help.

Incidentally, I don't seem to be getting high temps on my gpu-z tests yet either, but I did get a lock up again.
