My 955 doesn't like anything over 58C. Anything above that while I stress test produces false positives.
Either try re-seating your CPU+HSF or lap it and remount; I lapped mine (I was taking it off anyway so I might as well lap it before putting it all together again).

I don't see a problem upping it to 3GHz. Try switching the multiplier to reach 3, then run a stress test while monitoring temps. Keep the voltage at default. The worst thing that can happen is the PC freezing (so just press the reset button).
