Hello tom's hardware community,

I come here today with an interesting and weird topic; I had really no idea if I should put this in Motherboards or Processors. So recently I installed Age of Empires 3, a pretty old game, on my custom built PC, (parts list below), and it has an Asus Z77 Sabertooth Motherboard and a i7 3770k Ivy Bride Processor.

Whenever I start up this game, all of a sudden I get a weird noise, sometimes high pitched and some times just plain weird, and indescribable. After about an hour of sticking my head into the computer and trying to pinpoint where the sound is coming from I, at first, thought graphics card. Well after I RMAed my Asus GTX 680 Direct CU II top edition, I went to Best Buy and bought the best card they had there and mounted it. Sure enough same noise is still coming through the computer.

I'm guessing it has to be in the motherboard or in the processor's heat sink. It cannot be the PSU because I got a new one as well as and it is still having the same noise.

In the game, when I click on different menu places, and for example, go into a multiplayer lobby the sound changes pitch. Sometimes low to high and sometimes high to low. As I monitored my computer's CPU usage it barely moes from around 5% to a high of 20%, which is really not that much. I read on some other forums that it could be a capacitor.

I will be contacting both Asus Support and Intel Support to see what they say.

Anyone have any ideas or experiences with these two items together?

P.S. I can run stress tests with MSI Kombustor and nothing like this ever happens.

Hi, If you're experiencing the issue only in this game, then it might be software related.
As the game is old, try running it in compatibility mode (let's say xp sp3).
There are also patches for the game. They might help too.
