My father is using an old dell pc and I'm building him a new faster pc. We want to take the hard drive from the old dell pc and clone it to a new faster hard drive in the new pc. The only thing is I'm not sure whether the hard drive will clone properly because the pc was built by dell and I'm not sure if they put some sort of lock on it.

i know how to clone drives, I've done it before, i just don't know if branded pcs have a lock on their hard drives or not

I could not find an answer but I recently cloned the original drive in a Toshiba laptop and it went off without a problem. The laptop booted perfectly with the cloned drive. The other thing to keep in mind is whether or not the OS is OEM or not as this could present problems since it will be working on new hardware. You, as you probably already know, will need to make sure there are motherboard drivers for the OS as well.
