So, I have a CG8480 ASUS ROG Desktop ( http://rog.asus.com/desktops/z77/rog-cg8480/ ) that came with a

GTX 660 (With 3 GB),
I7-3770K
500 WATT PSU
16 GB RAM (4 Slots DDR3)

But I want to upgrade to the EVGA GTX 670 FTW (probably the http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_557_559&item_id=049454) since there is quite a huge difference in graphics from my GTX 660, as well I will point out budget isn't a huge deal, I would get the GTX 680 if my PSU can handle it, but I just don't know if my computers PSU can handle it.

I'm also not going to overclock it unless if it does it automatically, but i'm not doing it manually.

Or should I just get a GTX 670 if it's a big deal and I cant handle it or etc etc.

I am aware they say that the GTX 670 FTW minimum is 500watts, but I just need to know if it can handle it. I really don't want to upgrade my PSU if not necessary.
Thanks guys!

Hello Kevin,

The link you provided is not working for me. Regardless, prebuilts (even expensive) models have been known to skimp on the PSU to some degree. I would not be comfortable with running a GTX670/680 on a unknown PSU. Unless more information is known, I would recommend you to consider upgrading your PSU.

Here are some options to consider (subject to change depending on what PSU you have):

Corsair 600Watt Gaming Series [$69.88]
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_442&item_id=053109

Corsair 650Watt Enthusiast Series [$79.99]
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_441&item_id=052924

Hope this helps.

Warmest Regards,

Coffee~

Edit: I have found your PC on the Asus website, however I am unable to find the specification for the PSU. Can you please post a picture of the PSU's information sticker? Or tell us the brand and AMPs on the +12 volt rail?

Thank you for trying to help, after some research, I was able to find
First of all : http://www.frontierpc.com/computers/desktop-computers/desktop-computer/asus/cg8480-ca003s-desktop-computer-1024353178.html is selling it with a 500 Watt if im correct with a GTX 670.

Second: http://www.asusparts.eu/partfinder/Asus/Desktop/C%20Series/CG8480/PSU#SSD was able to find the parts of my computer if this is correct, then my 500 watt according to this is : http://www.asusparts.eu/Asus-04G185025540DP , when I googled the name POWER EUP 500W W/PFC, I found something that looks somewhat like the one in my computer I believe if I haven't forgotten, which is https://www.wiredzone.com/Supermicro-PWS-502-PQ-Power-Supply-500W-PS2-High-efficiency~10020423~0.htm , and and antec with the same specs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371007

Yeah... I'm very skeptical about the quality of the PSU they have in that PC. You'd think they would have a better PSU considering the PC costs $1,800 USD.

First of all... I'm not a sucker for branding but when it comes to PSUs, it affects quality and performance. Secondly, those two PSUs don't have the same specs at all. The Antec has more amps on the +12 volt rail; 22ams vs 17-18amps. I would recommend considering getting a new PSU.... I've heard too many horror stories. Plus my friend's PSU burned out last year, taking the motherboard and ram with it..... please reconsider.

Warmest Regards,

Coffee~

Well it is a new computer, I did get it this year, about 3 months ago. So a question, do you know what exactly even cause that for your friend?
Also so right now if I got my GTX 670 FTW from evga, what do you think the results would be for both current and future.?

I just want to know what's happening and all before I take action to get what I want, or upgrade what I need to.

If I really need to upgrade it, do you think I would still as well for a GTX 670 not the FTW edition?
Thanks for the help!

My apologies but that's completely irrelevant.... build quality and being new are two different things.

My guess is the PSU overheated/shorted out and took out the motherboard/ram with it. There was a strong smell of burning plastic/tar when I opened his case.

It would probably work. However, I can't help but feel it's a ticking time bomb. I honestly expected better considering it's from Asus. Maybe they're using a higher-end quality OEM PSU, but the lack of information on it makes me skeptical.

Sorry, I don't understand your question...

Warmest Regards,

Coffee~

Thanks again for your effort!

The first question I was trying to say that I'm assuming that the psu performance decreases over time since it gets older and is used often.

Thanks for prediction for what might happen.

And on the last question I meant to say if I do indeed need to upgrade my psu, would getting the regular gtx 670 be better and less power consuming?

Also if indeed this psu my computer has is good quality, I could get the gtx 670 ftw and run it with no problem?

Thanks once again!

Hardware does degrade over time, which is more reason to buy a solid product for a little bit more because it benefits you more in the long run. [i.e lower failure rates/defects, higher quality]

The FTW version is basically slightly factory overclocked, slightly better hardware. Where the FTW version really shines is the bigger PCB board and superior cooler [vs the stock]. In other words, you get your money's worth.

Assuming it's a good PSU, it will run the 670GTX without any issues.

Thanks again, this time I opened up my computer and took a couple of pictures, so first I believe the PSU says it's a Delta brand, the brand name is Delta. Hopefully that's right, I even took a couple of pictures.

I still don't trust it fully. Can you take a picture of the actual power supply information sticker?

*[Where the delta logo is located]

It's not bad for a OEM PSU. However, the fact it was so difficult to find information on the unit doesn't inspire confidence in the least.
