I'm going to be buying an FX 6300 soon and I have found that many people have overclocked it. Is it necessary to overclock it to achieve good performance with gaming? Advice would be appreciated.

depends on what video card(s) your using.

The stock clock 3.5Ghz on the 6300 is fairly low for the architecture, they seem to favor ~4.0+ ghz wich is easy for them to reach. one reason most like to overclock is that you can get near 8350 performance with the 6300 price.

The turbo on the processor goes up to 4.1 GHz, would I see a pretty significant performance gain in games like as Planetside 2 if I overclock it?

haven't see much on planetside reviews. the easiest way to see if you need to overclock or not is while running the game have task manager open, monitor the cpu usage (performance tab) and if you get lag spikes, check the task manager for constant 90% or higher useage on a single core, overclocking might be helpful. If all 6 cores are under ~70-80%, overclocking will be minimal for gains.
