urgent graphics card help

I have a sony vaio laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics card. I tried downloading the updated driver but could not install it due to "cannot find the compatable graphics hardware."
So I changed some of the code and manually added my device ID. the installation started and about half way thru the display shut off and has yet to come back on.
I rebooted and after the windows loading screen it goes black again. How can I fix this and still keep the updated graphics driver?

First try in safe mode and check
Then try system restore and you are able to go in windows try updating the driver from http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/57100
or http://www.geforce.com/drivers
