Hello there.

My current router/modem setup is far from ideal, and I have been forced to run a roughly 100ft Ethernet cable from my router to my machine, and it stretches all across the house and is rather inconvenient. I cannot change my router/modem location nor setup due to other complications. However, I have a cable box in my room connected to my TV and it got me thinking: is there some sort of adapter that I can plug the cable into (the cable that connects to the cable box) and plug an Ethernet cord into my machine? Is that possible? If so, any suggestions?

Also, how severely would this affect the connection? I can't imagine this is as good as plugging directly into the router.

Thanks.

The devices you want are called MoCA. They are a kinda expensive because not a lot of vendors on the market. They work with most cable systems but not all. They tend to have to most issues with tv systems that stream data between boxes. Things like directtv do not work since they use a similar method to MoCA to share the cable between receivers.

First off, thanks for your response. How would I figure out if my system is compatible? I am provided internet and tv by Cox Communications if you on the off hand chance know if those boxes are compatible or not. Also, is this the device you are referring to?

Yup the actiontec ones are pretty much all you see. Used to be ones from linksys and dlink not sure why they are so hard to find.

I have no clue about compatibility but I saw a ad someplace about cox and their multiroom dvr. A large number of these so called multiroom dvr are just using MoCA under the covers and are really just using pretty standard ip streaming methods. This would mean it will likely work with their system as long as you are not actually using their multiroom DVR platform.

Unfortunately MoCA is like the powerline ethernet. You pretty much just have to gamble and try it.
