Removed hard drive from laptop trying to transfer files to desktop

My toshiba M305D laptop died I removed the hard drive and I have transferred most of the files to my desktop and deleted the ones I did not need and then this morning when I turned my desktop back on, it said the hard drive from my laptop needed to be formatted.

If you connected the laptop drive by means of an external enclosure, it may be the enclosure that's developed a fault, causing a communication error between the drive and the PC. So try a new enclosure.

Perhaps the drive is/was failing and now it finally has.
