8 pin to 6 pin?

Quick question. I am exploring psu cables and such, trying to figure out some extensions.

Can you plug a 6 pin PCIE extension into an 8 pin cable, or would my only option be to plug in an 8 to 6+2 cable and tuck away the 2 pin part?

I ask because I assume I would have to use something like that to get from the 8 pin ports on a psu to the 6 pins on a GPU.

It depends on the cable, but you should be able. As you already said, 8pin PCI-E cables are just a 6pin cable with 2 extra pins...
