This morning, I plunged my SD card from my Cannon digital camera into my Dell laptop for backing up some newly taken pictures. But, it asked me if I want to “format” this SD card. Not knowing what was going on, I clicked “OK”. After a while, I finally realized that I had deleted all these photos by the formatting. What had I done? Is there a way to unformat this SD card? If you know anything about it, please let me know!
Thank you in advance!

Well! According to your description, you merely want to get your pictures back from this formatted SD card, right?
That’s not difficult as long as you take the right steps.
At first, do not attempt to save new picture on this SD card before you have accessed these original pictures.
Secondly, download a memory card recovery tool to help you. There is plenty of data recovery software out there. Some of them are free, some of them are paid. You could put much attention to this. If you also doubts, you could try a free SD card recovery tool here to take a chance.
Thirdly, preview your recovered pictures to see whether they are recovered rightly.
Fourthly, save the recovered picture on a different pace in case of data loss.
PS: You should learn to save at least two copies of your important data on different places in case of similar problems.

It is possible that SD card reader may be not working well. Suggest that you take out memory card from canon digital camera, then connect memory card to computer with a usb card reader. You may read this wiki page to know more about memory card reader
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_card_reader

If problem still exists. You may try the SD card on other computer, or connect through other usb port. If still have problem, you may follow this step by step article to fix it: http://goo.gl/dfgaV

After you have got back your data on the memory card, it is suggested to do a full format of the sd card to erase all the data on the sd card.

You may also wish to scan the sd card for virus, microsoft security essential is a good tool for this
