Is the i5 3570k good for hardcore gaming?

dont rely to much on the CPU, a good GPU will also be the barometer of playing high end games.

an hd 4650 but ive seen people playing games with 3 year old gpu's perfectly, so the cpu and the ram boosted it

How much were you looking to spend and do you currently have an 1155 motherboard that you are upgrading or buying all new? An FX 6300 and 7950 would be a better combo for about $10 less. Also decent motherboards for AMD tend to be cheaper. MSI 970A-G46 for $70-80 is a nice board for the money. The Microcenter I shop at can't seem to keep those boards on the shelves for very long as they sell out quickly. Depending on what 1155 board you were looking to get, you might even be able to go with a 7970 with the money saved.
