Dear all,

As a researcher in the field of marketing in Aberystwyth University of Wales I happen to be a computer enthusiast as well. I am doing a research project on online communities at the moment and would really appreciate your help!

Please follow this link and complete my survey, it shouldn’t take more than 5-7 minutes.

http://abergeography.eu.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_3mghix...

Questions focus on what motivates or prevents people to participate in online communities. The survey is part of large-scale study at Aberystwyth University under the supervision of Jan Breitsohl and will determine whether I will get future funding for my academic career.

Also it's fully academic so it’s not any kind of corporate data collection and it will not be put into commercial use.

Thank you very, very much for your help!

Ps. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time.
We assure you that all responses remain strictly ANONYMOUS and that no personally identifiable information will be associated with your responses.

I'm not too sure there's a place here for your survey, partly because I can't see all the questions without completing the first page. Other Mods may take a different view and one of them may close this thread.

What do you hope to establish in marketing terms from the activities of people who give their time for nothing?

Thank You for interest Saga Lout.
The aim of the research study is to evaluate the characteristic of the online communities which tomshardware surely is. There is no strict rules about what online community we involve however tomshardware was first (and I suppose the best) choice thanks to it structure and users approach.
Just like I stated in the opening post - there is no intention to use any of the results in the corporate marketing/commercial use as the survey is clearly scientific and anonymous.
I have been visiting tomshardware regularly as a quest over last couple of years, and found people here highly helpful and open minded.
One more time, thank You for Your cooperation.

Others may feel as I outlined - they won't go into the unknown without knowing how long it would take to complete and what sort of questions lurk there. Opening it up a little may give you some more responses.

I've just modified the thread and underlined the core aims of the survey. Hope it's more clear now.
Also, some questions might look similar - they are indeed. However, usually person will answer set of same questions in the same way rather than change the answer every time. This way of survey distribution helps to eliminate responses which are given randomly.

One more time, thank You for interest. I do appreciate all help!

OK - duly completed here. I've never seen the value of psychometric testing but if it tells you anything, all well and good. I think it's as simple as this. New posters come here to solve a problem and split into two groups - some remain and contribute what they already know and others leave but remember the forum as somewhere to revisit when necessary.

Those who stay do so because they have something to contribute. It isn't just a matter of altruism but because humans have a basic wish to share knowledge and believe it to be a free service. Personally, for every thread I can add to, there's a dozen others that will tell me something I don't know.

Will you be sharing your findings?

Great. Thank You for answer. Don't You think It is also matter of need for social identification or belonging as well as need for sharing the knowledge? Also, online communities in general seem to have different characteristics depending on the subject of the forum. Some of them are significantly harder to access that the others.

You made a good point about the certain pattern of membership cycle here. There is a similar hypothesis in the project already.

If the response rate will be high enough to call my sample "representative", then results and analysis will be available in form of scientific article. Obviously - again - it all depends on the number of the responses.

Any more answers everyone?

If it was hosted on the Universities web site then maybe, but one hosted by a commercial company (Qualtronics.com) is a out of the question.

I believe its Qualtrics research software You mean. Aberystwyth University holds the license allowing to use it for the researches. You are free to visit their website in case of any doubts. Good hint of detective investigation there however this research stays strictly scientific.
