I need to upgrade the BIOS firmware, but do not have windows.

I installed arch linux on Z77H2-A2X (V1.0). It performed great for about a week, then just goes to Error Message, saying boot failed. If I enter BIOS, then exit BIOS without doing anything else, the machine then boots successfully.

ECS support of course only supports windows, but a tech did helpfully suggest I install windows to see if the boot problem occurred.

ECS only supplies windows-based firmware upgrade utilities. There is not even a dos-based exe. My request as to whether they might supply a raw BIOS image was ignored.

Does anyone know of any way to perform firmware upgrade on an ECS Z77H2-A2X without having to buy some really overpriced utility (i.e., Windows 7 or 8)?

Hard to say if a BIOS update would solve the issue.
Try clearing the CMOS (unplug the power cord and remove the CMOS battery for few minutes).
If still the same, I would reinstall the OS.

Finally was able to try the CMOS clearing. That was successful. I can now boot directly into the box.
I greatly appreciate your help, alexoiu.
