Hello,

First My Specs:
HPE Pavilion h8-1220
I5-2500
Corsair HX650 PSU
8 GB of Ram
120gb SSD
1tb harddrive
Windows 8 64 bit
Mobo: Pegatron Corporation Model 2AB5

I have been having issues with my system shutting off randomly...no error screen or anything. It all started when I upgraded from a 560ti to a GTX 660. Everything seemed fine after installing the 660 (uninstalled the previous drivers before installing the 660 and installing the new drivers). Then a few hours after install, while browsing the internet, my computer shutoff. I turned it back on and then a few hours later while surfing the web, it shut off again. Now I was confused. I booted it up again, and kept any eye on the temperatures. While browsing the web and working on a paper, the PC shutoff again. The CPU never went above 34c and the GPU stayed at about 28c.

At this point I figured it was the GPU. I uninstalled the 660 and placed the 560ti back in. I sent the 660 back to amazon and ordered a 7850. While I was waiting for the 7850 to arrive, I continued to use my old 560ti without issue. Once the 7850 arrived, I uninstalled the 560 (drivers and all) and installed the 7850....When installing the drivers for the 7850, my computer shut off. I tried to install the drivers a few more times and each time the PC would shutoff.

I took the 7850 out and put it in my old Dell XPS 420 with a 2.4 q6600 and it has't shut down at all since I put the card in. Currently, I have the 560ti in my HPE Pavilion h8-1220 and haven't had it shutdown at all either.

Any ideas on what could be causing these video cards to shut down randomly in my HPE? I doubt it is the PSU because it powers my 560ti without issue.

Just because the PSU powers one card doesn't mean it will power the other. Check the voltage requirements.

Thank you for the reply. The voltage requirements for a system with a single HD 7850 requires a minimum 450W PSU with one 75W 6-pin PCIe power connector and should have 28A on the 12V rails. This is my PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139012 and this is the 7850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127663. From everything I can gather, the PSU should be more than sufficient. I would like to mention that I have not overclocked anything.

Another thing, can your motherboard support the card? I had an issue with an old tower I had where The MoBo could not support the newer card, and it would shutoff every time i tried to use it.

I am thinking it probably is the motherboard not being compatible with newer graphics cards. There maybe some damage to the motherboard as well because I just discovered that my rear USB ports do not work. I'm leaning towards just replacing the motherboard, however, I have head that it can be very hard to do with prebuilt computers from HP, Dell etc...

My question is, can i buy a new/different motherboard....as in not buying another of the exact same board that is already in my HP?

Here the spec for my motherboard:

Manufacturer: Pegatron
Form factor: uATX - 24.4 cm (9.6 inches) x 24.4 cm (9.6 inches)
Chipset: Intel H61
Memory sockets: 2 x DDR3
Front side bus speeds: 5 GT/s
Processor socket: LGA 1155
Expansion Slots:
1 PCI Express x16
3 PCI Express x1
1 PCI Express Mini Card x1
For more details, see Carmel2 motherboard specifications .

I'm not sure about the case dimensions. It just says it is a mid-ATX.

Also the model number I listed at the start of the thread is wrong. My PC is a HPE Pavilion h8-1110
