Hi All,

I'm moving on from a tower server to a rack server (1u) and need to keep things quiet as it will be sitting in my man cave which backs on to my 9 month old daughters' nursery.

I would appreciate your views on which model / brand etc appear to be the quietest.

I look forward to your replies.

Many Thanks

I have always been very leery of 1U servers simply due to the noise they are known for putting off compared to larger models even like a 2U. I won a HP ProLiant DL360E 1U server a little while back and was actually very surprised at how quietly it runs! It's still got some noise, there's no getting around that with a server, but it runs quieter than my 2U Supermicro easily. It seems the loudest part is the power supply, so if you want to cut down on noise and don't need the redundancy, then you can always stick with a single PSU instead of redundant units.

These things really aren't designed to be quiet. They're made for a data center where people aren't sitting there. It isn't like a home PC where that is a concern.
I don't know that anyone will give you a good recommendation.. it just isn't something that is considered when you're dealing with servers. The smaller the fans, the noiser they may tend to be due to the higher RPMs.
