Hi there,

I'm looking to build my own computer but, as I am on a tight budget, am finding it hard to choose a CPU.

I plan to buy the AMD 7850 2gb as my GPU and can't decide whether to get the i5 or FX-6300.

Getting the i5 will mean that I spend a lot more money and I'm wondering how much improvement I will receive in games. How much more fps will I get from the i5?

Also, I don't plan to overclock.

Thanks in advance.

So how many frames difference would I expect to see between the i5 3330 and FX-6300.

Is it a great deal like 15+ or a minimal amount, around 5?

FBS really is a matter of GPU more than CPU , the more powerful your GPU is the more FBS you'll get

by the way the minimum FBS for good gaming is 30

Ok, thanks for the help. I think I'll have to go with the FX-6300 as I don't think my budget can take an i5.

Still, I should have a good gaming experience.

Be careful with that choice as I've seen 680 and 7970 graphics cards be bottlenecked big time by processors. I'm talking like instead of getting 100FPS you'll get 50FPS.

If your overclocking, I'd go for the FX6300, as when it's overclocked it can come close but not quite match the 3350p in gaming and it's about as good in everything else, but you'll have to spend extra money overclockin when that extra money could just be put into the 3350p.

If your not overclocking, then get the i5 3350p. All a 3350p is, is a 3570k at 3.1Ghz instead of 3.4Ghz. And if you get the right MoBo you can even overclock the 3350p .3-.4Ghz to a 3570k's level.

Another thing is, if you get the 3350p, you'll have the most powerful CPU, per core, clock for clock, than any other CPU on the market. That's an awesome selling point for me.

Keep in mind the 3350p only costs 165$. Personally I'd spend the extra 35$ bucks for those 4 super powered cores. If your wondering what the P means, it mean that this processor doesn't come with HD Graphics. But neither does the FX6300.

I hope I can tempt you to go for an Intel as I think you are making a mistake. I used to love the FX6300 as budget gaming computer, and I still do if you want to get into overclocking, but now that the i5 3350p is on sale at 165$, it's becoming harder and harder for me to recommend it.

Really your not going to come away disappointed either way. But the best choice, at least for me, is the i5 3350p. Now if you were going to get an i3, I'd say go for the 6300. But this is an i5 we're talking about.

Check this 650$ build out that I made. It has a better graphics card in there along with some high perf. 2133RAM, and a quality MoBo, Case, and PSU. I like the case I picked out too. It's like those awesome thermaltake modular cases but it's a small version.

This build here will perform almost on par with my 1300$ 3570k/660Ti build that I currently own. And for only 650$, it's the absolute best build I can come up with. I'd get this for sure. You can even add a 65$ 64GB SSD for your OS so everything'll be super fast and the build will only cost you 700$.

CPU Intel Core i5-3350P 3.1GHz Quad-Core $164.99
Motherboard ASRock Z75 Pro3 ATX LGA1155 $79.99
Memory Patriot Viper 3 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 $58.71
Storage Seagate Barracuda 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM $56.98
Video Card Diamond Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB $214.00
Case Thermaltake Level 10 GTS (Black) ATX Mid Tower $49.99
Power Supply Corsair 500W ATX12V $29.99
Optical Drive Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer $16.97

Thanks man, you've been a lot of help. Unfortunately, I live in the UK and no stores seem to take into the currency difference between US dollars and GB pounds, plus all the components cost more. This means that it may cost be a lot more for the i5.

I'll keep looking around to see if there are any discounts on, but how much performance increase do you think the i5 3350P would have over the FX-6300, if they were using the 7850 GPU?

Just for a guestimate, about 2-20FPS, depending on the game and the frame rate you play at. If your gaming at 100FPS you might get 10-15FPS less with the FX6300. If your gaming at 50 you'll lose more like 3-8FPS. This estimate is just in general not off of any specific benchmark although I have seen benchmarks. And trust me, with my 660Ti I'm always trying to push up to 60FPS, so If I'm losing 8 that'll knock me down to 52, so it makes a difference. The FX6300 is still a good gaming PC though and it only costs 129.99 over here.

But like I said, the i5 3350p is THE most powerful CPU, per core, clock for clock, than any other CPU on the market right now. Meaning that no other Intel or any other CPU, with the same clock speed, has faster cores than the 3350p. Even the 3960x is slower. This is why I absolutely love the value in this processor. The reason I know so much about it, is because I have a 3570k, and all a 3570k is, is an overclockable 3350p. And the 3350p doesn't have HD graphics, but who cares, your getting a graphics card. So what I'm saying is, is if you have a chance at an Intel i5 desktop processor, TAKE IT, you won't regret it. Since your not overclocking you can go cheap on the motherboard anyways. Just make sure it has SATAIII and USB 3.0 and PCIe 3.0.

And the 3350p is not only better at gaming, but at everything else. I can't think of one thing the 6300 would be better at than the i5. And I'm sure no ones going to come here and say any different because they would be lying. So if even you have to pay an extra 50$, just save up a little more and get what you want.

I'm not just some Intel fan, I'm a fact fan.

Your definitely beginning to persuade me!

However, would the six cores of the FX-6300 not be more useful in the future than only the four cores of the i5?

If Crysis 3 is any indication, I'd say the FX is awesome value

You really want to look at reviews and make up your own mind. Generally the FX is a bit behind the i5 but also cheaper. Sometimes, like in Crysis above, it's actually ahead (MIN FPS) despite being cheaper. That equates to far superior value.

For the money, the FX6300 is a great chip, and you would be fine going forward, you would have to go to something like a HD 7970 GPU to bottleneck it with that processor. If it fits better into your budget go that route, if you have the cash and want to spend it, buy intel.
