if the monitor is d-sub, but the graphics card has dvi connections but the motherboard has d-sub what happens then??

What happens when? Are you referring to your discrete gfx card or your on=board gfx? If you want to connect your D-Sub monitor to your DVI port, use an adapter and plug it into the one that has the 4 holes around the flat blade. The four holes are for the D-Sub's analog signals.

i wanted to ask if i could conect my d-sub monitor to my motherboard but the graphics card would work?

Depending on your MB/BIOS... If you have a graphic card in the PCIe slot, the BIOS may disable the video output from the on-board. Give it a try. If you can't get a display when plugged into the on-board video, then you'll know. It won't hurt anything.
