Machine won't boot with 3x 7970

I am trying to configure a machine with 3x 7970 GPUs, but when the third card is in it won't boot up at all. Everything lights up but I get nothing on screen. The motherboard has a status indicator, but naturally it's under a GPU. The individual cards and slots check out fine, and 2x works fine in any combination.

Hardware is:
MSI Z77A-GD80
Core i7-3770K
Corsair HX1050 power supply
3x MSI Lighting 7970 Twin Frozr

I really don't know what to do here. Thanks for your help. (Yes, I need the muscle. No, I'm not running games.)
