help me decide what to do next

i'm looking to upgrade my pc soon but i have no idea what to get next i have an amd FX 4100, 8GB of ram and a nvidia gt 440. i have 64 bit windows 7 premium and my motherboard is an asus m5a78l-m usb3. also can anyone help me figure out what's holding the system back if anything, I bareley make it over 40 FPS in any game released in the past 2 years, thanks!
