The problem is how to get XP to boot far enough to enable me to uninstall Zone Alarm.

It continually blue screens with Bugcheck code: 0xC2 (0x43, <different each time>, 0x0, 0x0) citing vsdatant.sys (A Zone Alarm component) as the guilty driver that is causing a BAD_POOL_CALLER error.
This happens in Safe mode too.
Simply renaming vsdatant.sys (done from another PC) does not help.
The HDD does not show any faults (SMART & chkdsk) or virus traces.
The same BSOD occurs when attempting a repair install.

Is there any solution that does not include the word 'reformat' ?

Do any of the Safe Mode options work form the Advanced Boot menu when you press F8 at startup? As you renamed the file from another PC, can you not go in the same way and delete all the ZA files from the Program Files folder? A second option to have a Repair installation from an XP CD would not involve losing your files - they would all go into a file called windows.old.
