8800GT 512MB SLI vs HD6850

I wish to ask if HD6850 outperforms 2x 8800GT 512mb in SLI mode ...

Pretty simple answer here. Yes.

Comparing that old of gen card to a new one, the older one usually looses.

I know a 1gb gtx 460 beats sli 8800 so I would guess so would a 6850

Difficult to quantify; I thought this chart might give some clues:

But it only shows the rankings by single cards.

I would favour the 6850 purely because it is so much newer. Many modern games will no longer run on the 8800 series.

9800gx2 = 2x9800gt and 9800gt = 8800 gt

If that is indeed the case, they are very similar performance-wise. The 6850 is the better choice then.
