Gaming on 5760x1080 vs 2560x1600

So far I was set on 3 1920x1080 monitors with swivel so I could turn it into a 3240x1920 setup when I had to do work. Someone mentioned to me that they thought that a single 2560x1600 monitor was better for gaming and work than the 3 1080p monitors. I can easily see how in photoshop and other programs an as large as possible desktop size has an advantage but how about gaming?

I usually play games like Skyrim and ARMA which has large landscapes and not so much FPS anymore.

logic (and a calculator) tells me that 5760x1080 has about 1.5 times the pixels that 2560x1600 does, so it would make sense that the 3 monitors are more intense and require more graphical power to run fluidly.

I've my mind set on the GTX Titan for various reason besides raw power and am willing to shallow the price tag, so I can run even 3 monitors rather smoothly.

Gaming wise I've been looking at youtube videos and it seems to me that in most games the picture at the edges of a 3 monitors setup gets distorted. The edges just seem to fill out the extra space instead of putting more of the environment on the screens.

I think the best solution would actually be similar to my old monitor setup where, I had a 1920x1200 gaming monitor center and then an extra, cheap 1080p monitor on the side I wouldn't use in games but added space to the desktop for menus when working. I would just get a 2560x1600 for a center monitor now

OK, been looking a bit more on forums for input and I'm beginning to love the idea of a single high-res display. My problem now is that I can get 3 x U2312hm 1080p monitors for around ½ the price tag on a 30" monitor like the U3011 or ZR30w. The new U3014 cost a further 50% on top of that. Except for some overshoot issue on grey colors it seems to be the perfect U3014
