Nope! We want users to be able to see what your pertinent badges are, per the section you are in. So in the Windows 8 section, it's more important to allow users to see that you have a Windows 8 badge, rather than show them what you've got in Cellphones. It helps to reassure new users, and to establish a visible vector of trust in the responses they receive from experts here.

But what you said is exactly what I'm asking for!
Right now, for me the Applications badge is always shown. Why would users in eg. Cellphones care if i have an Applications badge?
I want to be able to configure it so i can show my Cellphones badge in that section and my Apps badge in the Apps section. You cannot do that at the moment.

Just ADD an apps tag and your apps badge will show...assuming you have one....

Per this thread, I'm adding a new item to the Rules of Conduct for Tom's Hardware.
• Tag Abuse
Any manipulation of tags beyond tagging threads appropriately will result in a disciplinary action. This includes removing tags that belong to a thread, or adding tags that do not apply to a given thread. Ex: Thread "How do I overclock my AMD Athlon?" - acceptable tags could be overclocking, AMD, Athlon, CPUs. Unacceptable tags would be graphics cards, Windows 7, WiFi, Security, etc.
Infractions resulting from tag abuse will generate the following action:
1st Offense: Warning
2nd Offense: Badge Level of Associated Tags Degraded
3rd Offense: Ban
Tags are designed to ensure users are able to find pertinent information that suits their needs, and to ensure people asking questions are interacting with experts who are skilled and vetted in their given subject matter. We have to maintain a standard level of acceptable behavior with tags, or the whole system will end up considerably less useful than it can be. Thank you for your understanding in this.

I have only seen one actual thread where someone abused this so far. I would bet it's not the last!
I have had 2 people who did not even post in a thread come along and select best answers though. Both threads were less than 4 hours old. I can see this being a larger problem than tag abuse. There should be a time limit before anyone other than the OP can select a best answer. At least 24 hours.

anort3, we are aware of these issues and they are under review and there will be fixes coming soon, it was hoped that people using this forum would follow proper procedure and not look to abuse the system. The option to select a best answer and the tag insertion were intended to give users additional participation in the event an OP did not select a solution or made an obvious wrong choice or did not initially add the correct tags. Forum veterans would surely appreciate this added options and treat it with respect but for the actions of a few......

All it needs is to make it much harder to be granted the access to this ability in the first place. There are plenty of us old hands i'm sure that like myself were looking forward to using this new ability to assist the comunity.

I agree with Mac on this. It is a great idea it just needs the requirements tweaked. Maybe 1 year minimum membership or a total post minimum. Maybe have the mods be able to grant the power to users they know will not abuse it. I really don't see any of us who have been around for years abusing the new features.
I like finally being able to see all the real old timers join dates now and not 1970. Although I guess now that I have been here 4 years I am an old timer to most members!

to make my badges show, does the OP have to add the tags to the thread he/she created or do I do that, if it's not done already? At no point should you ever add tags to a thread just to make your badges show up. Tags are for threads associated with those tags. You can add tags to a thread to make the tags more accurate as regards the thread, but please don't add any tags for the sake of showing off your badges. The idea is to make it so that only the pertinent badges show up in a thread associated with those badges. Showing off the whole tacklebox of badges is ponderous, and could even be confusing to original, new posters looking for answers. Envision you post a response, and the user has to mousehover over every badge you've got from Aardvark Feeding & Care to Underwater Basket Weaving to find out if you know what the heck you are talking about in Windows 8.
Quote:
Why don't the badges just automatically appear on the user if they're posting in a section in which they have a badge? Slated for speedy development is the system automatically adding the pertinent tags to new threads in given sections, so it should hopefully happen automatically after that point.

Just checked my joining date after reading anort3's last post. I don't know where it came from but I have been a member way longer than that. Maybe that the first post I made when the old forum was new ?Join dates have been updated with the earliest record we have of you making your first post, and should be more accurate now (rather than 1970).

That's what is under review and there are no plans to scrap it but we do have to change it to make it harder to abuse the option, we want forum veterans to have the ability to select the solution and tags in the event the OP doesn't. As people become more invested in the forum they become part of the community and should share in the process of making the forums better. As with any new system once implemented there needs to be refinement to get to the final product so nothings being scrapped.
The tags ended up being abused so something should be changed so it doesn't continue but they will remain. It's also important to alert the Mods to any and all abuse so quick action can be taken.
