upgrade my pc

hi. i have a pc that is getting old. i bought it from hp in 2008. i don't have enough money to build a new pc from scratch but i would like to upgrade it as much as i can. my budget is very low. ill be building it over time.

this month i have 200 usd to spend, ill be upgrading in april. in may i will have another 80 usd to spend. i realize that on a 200 dollar budget i cant upgrade all at once, but i would like to upgrade the parts that would give me the most immediate performance. this is my first upgrade as in the past ive always bought prebuilt pcs.

im upgrading because i want to play civilization5, sins of the solar empire, and my 3 gigs of ram are not enough to play on large maps or play maxed out. i would like to focus on first simply having enough power to run the games. but, i also own cubase artist7 so the processor is also quite important. in terms of importance, civ5, sins, and last cubase. lately, ive been focusing more on games and less on music so games are the real reason for this upgrade.

Shit. I think we are going to have some problems here. First thing that comes to mind is PSU. I just checked it 460W.

The 3 things you can upgrade is GPU, RAM and PSU. For a better gpu I would recommend a better PSU. When you get your $280 I would upgrade all 3 together. That is your best bet I feel.

You can go upto 8gb (4x2gb max) on memory ddr2 8000.

And one PCI Express. Man after looking at the mb you might be able to game on med settings. For how long I am not sure. If you can get around $500 you can get urself a decent gaming rig. With the current setup I cannot really recommend upgrading.

im definitely listening. so i should hold back for a couple months, then upgrade? because it would be stupid to spend 200 usd on maximizing the 8 gb ram. are you saying that if i did upgrade the ram to 4-8 gb, it would be dumb because i would be holding my upgrade back due to the older hardware? because, by doing so, i would have a short fix, that being the 4-8 gb of ram, then if i upgraded my hardware, the ram i bought would be useless with the new hardware?

I would hold off on upgrading. In fact I would not upgrade your current system. Save more money say around $500. You can salvage parts like DVD burner, Monitor and HDD from current computer and maybe even use your OS key. $500 will get you a decent gaming computer capable of playing most games on Med-High settings.
